I did something very similar on one bicycle. It's number 33 in my Google
Doc "42 Useful Items that You Can't Buy at Your Local Bicycle Shop." See

Or you can attach the bicycle to a post without using a lock to make
it really secure.

Actually, I met the owner of S&S Machine who makes the S&S Torque
Couplers. He has done the same thing using the tool that unscrews the
couplers. It's difficult to separate the frame without the proper tool.

That's mickey mouse stuff puffed up for the idiot box. As a student, with the help of friends, we turned a statute of Cecil John Rhodes, pointing north, inscribed "Yonder lies thy hinterland," standing in front of Parliament House in the Botanical Gardens, around 180 degrees so that he pointed at the South Pole. We replaced all the divots the crane took from the lawn neatly. You'd think a parliamentarian would discover the imposture, but none did in five weeks, until a schoolboy on a class civics outing consulted his Eagle Scout pocket compass and said, "But sir, he's pointing South!" and was cuffed on the ear for interrupting the teacher. --- AJ

Somewhat late, but why restrict giving gifts by calendar events?

https://www.bumm.de/en/products/akku-scheinwerfer/parent/180/produkt/180l.html
(Ixon core) as a head light,
https://www.sigmasport.com/de/produkte/licht-systeme/rueckleuchten/stvzo/blaze
(Blaze) as a tail light.

Please ignore the picture illustrating the blaze light, which is either
just plain idiotic, or a great illustration about what's wrong with
bicycle ways, helmets, urban planing, and marketing of bicycle products.
But that rear light is nice.

Both my sons mostly did weight liftingto stay fit. Then came Covid-19
and the fitness centers closed. One began jogging and excercing
outdoors, the other one bought a new road bike in June and did a lot of
rides around his home town. After self quarantaining long enough, he
visited us in the first half of December, doing 104 km from Essen to
Bonn in about four and a half hours door to door.

https://www.mystrobl.de/ws/pic/fahrrad/essen/2bonn202012.mp4

(For this visualization I used a vertical exaggeration factor of three).

The visit gave me the chance to try his new bike and to inspect some of
the accessoires he bought, including the two lights mentioned above.

The Ixon core is lightweight (112 g complete) and small light, with
quite a lot of power (50 lx for 3 hours or 12 lx for 15 hours) for such
a tiny thing and with good optics. The brake light function of the tail
light from Sigma might be a gimmick, but combined with the automatic
mode it allows a kind of "switch on and forget" usage which comes quite
handy, when starting a long ride in daylight.

What would you consider as a bike-related gift for that person?

This depends on the amount of money to spend and of course on that
persons preferences. My son bought a pair of power meter pedals
https://cycling.favero.com/assioma for his new bike a while ago. He
even switched from SPD to LOOK in order to be able to use these without
modifications. We simply gave money, suggesting to use at least half of
it on bicycle stuff.

These pedals allow some interesting measurements, for example how
balanced your pedaling is, or in what angular range force is actually
applied with the left and on the right foot. Garmin even has a programm
to enrich a video with a graphical display of these and other values.

Not my thing, I'm quite happy with my GSMap 64s, which I use on all my
rides, without any additional sensors. I don't even have a cadence
sensor on any of my bikes, never had. But I do see the point in using
such tools when the intention is a combination of riding for fun, to
explore a greater part of the local region _and_ to stay reasonably fit
and strong during times like these. It's an investment, just like a
better drill.

I think I ...ahum... qualify to that description. Because of 'The Plaque' as Jay calls it I could not celebrate the fact that I started at my company 40 years ago. That sucked. My colleagues however must have picked up me mentioning that I almost tripped over my 35 years old SKS Rennkompressor floor pump a couple of months ago and stepped on the cilinder with my full weight. The cilinder must got some damage because it was hard to operate since then. My first attempt the repair it failed and I planned to take the pump to work for a second attempt. We have a measuring and aligning device, but I didn't came to it yet. We get a reward if one of our inventions get filed for a patent (1000 euro before taxes) and I always say to my colleagues that they should spend that unexpected extra money on something really nice that makes life more pleasant, easier and/or nicer; on something they normally would not buy. All that combined with my 'reputation' concerning bicycles they bought me this gift:

Bloody hell, THAT is a nice floor pump. They really surprised me. Big smile..

Silca used to make the end with a "pull" that would reduce the pressure on the rubber sealer giving it greater life. They stopped making this for reasons unknown. Although the one's they use now look the same they are missing this feature. I suppose they think that the rubber sealer is so cheap that increasing its lifespan isn't worth the extra manufacturing costs.

That’s a nice looking floor pump. Congratulations on 40 years of service.

Pfff. As a gift to someone with 40 years of service, the numbers on the gauge should be bigger -- and back-lit. And it should be voice activated. "Silca, I've fallen and can't get up, pump up my tires." Or maybe clap-on, clap-off.
