Great faux-pas of the 20th century #27:

Scene: a train, in the middle of rural China. Aboard it are Dr Larrington,
her chum, a BBC film crew and a KiloSeveral of Natives.

To pass the time, Dr Larrington engages the BBC's reportery-type in
conversation. The topic turns to the Falklands /Wa/, which had finished
but a few months previously.

Dr Larrington: So, did you go to the Falklands, then?
Brian Hanrahan (for it was he): Er, yes...

Heh.

Time: circa 1989

Scene: a dinner party of theatre-types, plus two somewhat inebriated
historians who had been invited to boost the flagging conversation, and
who were unaware of the identity of the important guest.

Historian #1: No, I didn't think much of [the film version of] Henry V.
There were these glaring anachronisms - the soldiers wouldn't be...
cue long, rambling, highly technical and drunken discourse on medieval
weaponry and tactics

Kenneth Branagh: I...see.

There's a story about Sir Thomas Beecham when he was at a glittering
reception and found himself in conversation with a lady whose face was
incredibly familiar, but he couldn't for the life of him remember who
she was. So he tried fishing for clues:

- So are you well?

- Yes thank you.

- And the family?

- Yes, they are fine.

- And your husband, is he well?

- Yes, very well, thank you.

- And is he still in the same line of business?

- Yes, he's still king.

Madam, I do not care if you are the director's /only/ wife, if you
smoke I shall be sick.

You got a better quality of withering sarcasm in those days.
