Default Yer Noggin Needs Physical Exercise

People often consider walking and running to be activities that the body is able to perform on autopilot. But research carried out over the past decade by us and others would indicate that this folk wisdom is wrong. Instead exercise seems to be as much a cognitive activity as a physical one.

Bertrand Russell hiked over 30 km / day when he was young.

On the down side:

"Their marriage began to fall apart in 1901 when it occurred to Russell, while he was cycling, that he no longer loved her."

OK maybe that isn't a down side.

When out and about, there are not many hungry lions around anymore but
there are plenty of large growly things that produce the same outcome
when guard is dropped. The cognitive activity required to survive
probably hasn't changed significantly.
