Driver arrested after killing cyclist today

A 41-year-old man has died following an early morning crash in Bridgend.

The cyclist, from Pencoed, was heading towards Cardiff when he was involved in a collision with a silver Jeep Cherokee on the A48 just before 6am.

South Wales Police was called to the incident on the A48 Crack Hill, in Brocastle near The Golden Well Chinese restaurant in Bridgend, at around 5.50am on Wednesday, May 27.

A police statement said: "Officers investigating a road traffic collision on the A48 Crack Hill at around 5.50am today have confirmed that the cyclist, a 41-year-old man from Pencoed has died as a result of the incident.

"The incident involved a silver Jeep Cherokee and a bicycle heading towards Cardiff. A 71-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

"A road closure remains in place with investigations continue and motorists are advised to avoid the area." Officers investigating the collision are appealing for any witnesses to the incident, or to anyone who saw the manner in which the Jeep was being driven before the crash, to come forward.

They are also interested in hearing from anyone who has dash cam footage from the area at that time to come forward.
