Default Dynamo Question

I've noticed a lot of bikes recently using Shimano Nexus(?) hub dynamos.
At a walking pace these seem to emit a stream of bright flashes, a
strobe if you like. My old faithful FER2000 just emits a dull orange
glow at walking pace.

So what is the difference? The lights in question appear to be
filament, like mine, but I can't tell for sure. They usually seem to be
lumotechs.

Is the some sort of capacitance/inductance discharge going on?

I've tried a google but nothing obvious. Should I buy a SON?

a characteristic of direct drive hubdynamo's which turn slowly
