Would that be UCI-legal for the Hour Record?

Dear Hank,

Probably not UCI-legal.

This more modern frame would also probably be illegal:

(Talk about a weird throwback to the late 1880s!)

These frames should be outlawed on aesthetic principles:
http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/racingbates800.jpg
http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk...merkens800.jpg
http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/geraldfinlay1.jpg

A nice old photo gallery:
http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/gallery3.html

I wonder if the rear wheel on the far right was somehow outlawed?

A nice old rider gallery, with a surprising number of USA riders:

indeed: 1.3.014 ... The length of the saddle shall be 24 cm minimum
and 30 cm maximum.

The crossframe is illegal too

Curly's are verboten: It shall be constructed of straight or
tapered tubular elements (which may be round, oval, flattened, teardrop
shaped or otherwise in cross-section) such that the form of each element
encloses a straight line.

including the fork? Every bike I've ever owned has had a curve in the
fork tubes. (and I just got off of a bike that doesn't have a single
bit of steel in it, save for fasteners, chain etc., for that matter.)

I think I understand why the regs, to exclude exotic designs and make it
a contest between riders, but when the "typical" consumer-level bike
doesn't follow those regs, that's not an "exotic" design anymore.

that is a very interesting design! it's got all the loading bases
covered. what it needs to cover next is the torsional, and it's a
/real/ frame.

Or fast forward to the 1980s. Remember the Slingshot MTB? Hey, they still make
them: http://www.slingshotbikes.com/

Is there no info on that hoop thing? Strange. Guess even our retrogrouches
aren't that retro.

Dear Ron,

I've asked before about those spoke hoops, but no one seems to have a
clue about them.

The general ignorance didn't really surprise me, since even Aldo Ross
was puzzled by the damn things:

http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/v/...geViewsIndex=1

But I keep hoping that someone on RBT saw those spoke hoops in his
misspent youth, asked about them, and has the inside scoop. They seem
to have vanished in the early 1950s.

That reminds me- at the Seattle Classic Bicycle Show (part of the
annual Bike Expo) had something that stuck out as an oddity to me this
year: a Hetchins with straight stays.

http://i44.tinypic.com/317frb4.jpg

Forgive the blurriness on the pics, lighting was low, and I only had
the camera on my phone.

I'm curious: did Hetchins always use straight stays on their track
bikes? I mean, you're not worrying about road comfort, so maybe...

Given the NR components, this would have been from long before the
Obree rules had banned funny bikes from the Hour Record.

I'm also amused by the mudguard eyelets on the fork ends.

Dear Hank,

We notice the curly stuff, but Hetchins offered every model in
orthodox or curly:

"The above catalog from the 1960s is typical of Hetchins offerings. It
lists a number of frame types or geometries: Road Racing Model No.2,
Road Racing Nos. 3 and 3A, Road Racing No.4, Road Racing No.6 (replica
of "Tour of Britain"), Path Model No.10, Circuit of Britain, Mountain
King, and Track Supreme; they were distinguished by various head and
seat tube angles, bottom bracket heights, and so on. All were
available with curly or orthodox stays."
