Why can't cyclists slow down?

If the cyclist had been travelling at a reasonable speed then he would have been able to stop before the collision. Not if the ped stepped out in front of him without warning. You're making assumptions based on your prejudices. Princes Park is a.. er... park. One with railings all round it. *Not* a road. Perhaps the 66 YOM was hiding behind a tree & jumped out.... as 66 yo men with a dog often do, and it is of course completely impossible for any vehicle user travelling in a park to anticipate that someone might appear from behind a tree. I expect it was some hi-speed racing cyclist pretending to be the next Wiggy, head down, brain in neutral, spitting everywhere, sweat pouring, heart about to give out, lycra stretched to capacity, hopped up on head ingested benzene. |

So even if the cyclist was travelling slowly and the ped just stepped in front of him when the cyclist was just a few inches away without the ped looking first, it's the cyclists fault? |

You obviously have never riden a bike! |

You're making assumptions based on your prejudices. The cyclist was in a public park. He should have used anticipation & observation. He didn't. Have you never seen a ped walking along and suddenly change direction, I have had some do this in front of me without any warning! Or have you never walked in the street? |

The cyclist is unlikely to have been travelling slowly, given that both of them were admitted to hospital. So your two separate "ifs" seem unrelated to what is so far known of the case. |

"Many people barely recognise the bicycle as a legitimate mode of transport; it is either a toy for children or a vehicle fit only for the poor and/or strange," Dave Horton, of Lancaster University, wrote in an interim assessment of the Understanding Walking and Cycling study. "For them, cycling is a bit embarrassing, they fail to see its purpose, and have no interest in integrating it into their lives, certainly on a regular basis." |
