Gibby A few years ago, I tried to follow him through traffic on the last two laps of an eight-corner crit in Kurgan town (near Miramar). Self-preservation took over pretty quickly and I had to let go. Afterward, despite the whinings of those he squeezed through, I had to lean over and say, "Gutsiest move I ever saw, man!" Slider |

Of course, it helps if your day job is being a racer dude. I would like to see how he takes a corner at speed. *Must feel odd for him to not be almost rubbing his knee on the pavement. R Ben Spies is known for having his arms out wide while cornering. His nickname "Elbowz" is on the side panel of his jersey. http://www.latebraker.com/galleries/...day/Elbowz.jpg I hope he doesn't do that in the last corner of a crit field sprint. Well, he probably wouldn't do it just like in the picture, but there are plenty of people who ride "wide" when sprinting. *It is especially common on the track. I recall a SoCal masters racer from years back who used to come over to AZ for some of the early season crits. *He was quite large, with a bit of adipose over what must have been a very powerful, muscular frame. *He raced w/ 38cm wide bars and his attitude was that once his bars cleared a space, whatever problems his hips caused later were not his concern. *I've never seen anyone else quite so fearless at pushing through gaps that didn't exist as that guy. That can only be one person. Really, who are you thinking of? Gibby Nope. Not saying he wasn't like that, but that's not who I'm referring to. |

Dumbass - People who complain about that sort of stuff don't realize the person they're complaining about is a lot better than they are and that's why one person is scared and the other person isn't. thanks, Kurgan. presented by Gringioni. |

Maybe it's a little more complicated than that (i.e., in some cases it's not "better", but "stupider"), but whatever-- God invented elbows for a reason-- so we could use them when we need to. --D-y |

I'm an ok bike handler, but one time in a fairly techy crit, I was fighting for position with a guy who (I didn't know) was a pretty experienced trackie. I leaned on him a bit for position, so he swore at me and basically did what trackies do in that situation: came back and ran into me 2 or 3 times in short order. Fortunately I was way above my racing weight, so that didn't work at all. -- Ryan Cousineau http://www.wiredcola.com/ "In other newsgroups, they killfile trolls."
