Whilst I used to have spoke problems I think wheel building is probably
moving into the realm of extremely eccentric.

I haven't had spoke problems for years, my current bike is coming up to
to 15,000km without a single break. In that time Jobst has shuffled off
and there have be no discussions of stress relief.

So perhaps the wheel building class is an elaborate plot to take the
**** out of gullible cyclists?

Factory built wheels have probably benefited from technological
advances in recent years, so it's less of an issue. Many cyclists will
never be in the situation of choosing which rims and hubs to combine
with which selection of spoke type, number and pattern, something which
was almost a rite of passage for a "serious cyclist" in olden days. But
there are still some who like to do it that way, and some of them
prefer to do the building themselves too. Additionally people with
special hubs - dynamo, gear and/or brake - may want to replace a worn
or damaged rim and may not have a local wheel builder, or in the case
of a cycle commuter may need a quick turnaround. I wonder how
good the average bike shop mechanic is these days anyway, at building a
wheel from scratch.

You are making me feel old.

Last time I had a wheel built to order it was for a new Schmidt hub dynamo.
The bike mechanic was insulted when I gave him the hub size/ spoke length info supplied with the dynamo, not sure why.

My spoke key is less than holy; actually its cursed, especially when it
slips, or I can't find it.

My spoke key is always in my saddle bag, along with the allen keys,
puncture repair kit, spare tube, and decathlon ultra light jacket.

Mu Spokey never slips, unless the spoke is seized or the nipple is
already chewed up. It's so good I wonder how I ever managed with
anything else.
