E Bus Can Average 5.7 mph Better Than A Diesel Bus

New York City Aims for All-Electric Bus Fleet by 2040 NYC has more than 5,700 MTA buses. Taking the fleet electric would reduce climate-warming emissions and cut fuel, maintenance and health costs. Phil McKenna 26 Apr 2018 [image] New York City is testing 10 electric buses this year and plans to go all electric by 2040. How quickly it reaches that goal depends in part on technology and EV charging infrastructure. Credit: Chris Hondros/Getty Images New York City plans to convert its public bus system to an all-electric fleet by 2040, a new target announced this week by NYCÂ Transit President Andy Byford. "It does depend on the maturity of the technologyâboth the bus technology and the charging technologyâbut we are deadly serious about moving to an all-electric fleet," Byford, who became head of NYC Transit in Jan, said at a Metropolitan Transit Authority board meeting on Wed. Byford's comments follow an ambitious action plan released on Mon that seeks to address flagging ridership and sluggish service on the nation's largest municipal bus network. The average speed of an MTA bus in Manhattan is among the slowest of large metropolitan systems at 5.7 miles per hour. After about 100 km of cycling the plan was to take the bus from Mecca to Coachella. When I got to the intersection I thought, "why waste 50 cents when it's faster to ride?" I was willing to give public transportation the college try . . . Bret Cahill |
