It's a real thing. I just lost a front wheel auto bearing.
The originals went 54 years. The chinese bearings included
with the spindle kit lasted 1-1/2 years. Yikes!

Or, perhaps, buy from a proper bearing shop and disdain the cheap

Sorry about the wheel bearing problems. I've been having similar
problems with aftermarket chainsaw overhaul kits. Most claim to be
Nikasil (nickel on silicon carbide) plated. A few actually are. The
factory rebuild kits seem to last forever. The aftermarket kits, much
less.

In winter 2018, I was helping with a vertical mill spindle rebuild
which included replacing all of the bearings.
http://www.learnbydestroying.com/jeffl/CNC%20Conversion%20Project/Shizuoka%20Bearings3.xlsx
Most of the bearings were purchased on eBay. I tried to buy only from
bearing distributors with ebay sites who sold bearing that were made
in Japan. We also measured what we could before installing the
bearings. Two of the commodity bearings (6002ZZ) had an eccentric
inner race and what might have been variations in bearing diameters. I
purchased six more replacements from three different sources, all of
which measured fine. Incidentally, this was a latex glove job as any
corrosion from sweat would take the bearings out of tolerance. With
only 2 possible counterfeits out of 19 bearings, I guess I was either
sufficiently careful, or very lucky.

At the parts store there were three choices for that bearing
all the same price $9.49. Two were china. I bought the ROC
bearing. The brand name on the box has become meaningless.

John, will you are least attempt to think? Shops are buying from distributors and they are buying from suppliers that could be getting these counterfeit bearings themselves totally innocently. China will not take any action against their people putting these things on the market and it is extremely difficult to discover where in the supply chain they are being switched. The ONLY way we know of this is because major Japanese manufacturers saw an unwarranted drop in demand and investigated it.

NTN is one of the best bearings in the world and also that most counterfeited by the Chinese. Their bearings have about 25% of the life or less at high speed. Even Japanese auto manufacturers are getting fooled and in-head cam engines suffer a great deal from these poor bearings. Mazda engines are particularly at risk of poor bearing quality. How would you like your 50 thousand dollar car to break a crankshaft which of course destroys the block.

All I can say Tommy is that over the years I have bought any bearings
that I required from shops that specialized in selling bearings and
after some(probably) 70 or more years of buying bearings I've never
had a problem.

As for China taking action... are you insane? Why should they bother?
After all they reckon that if some dumb ass is stupid enough to buy
cheap bearings why shouldn't they sell them to him.

Why am I not surprised that "over the years" you believe is sufficient to excuse the latest problems. Do you also think that because they burned the poppy fields in Afghanistan that there is no longer an opium problem in the USA?

Burned the poppy fields? Where are you coming from. Afghanistan is the
largest grower of the Opium poppy in the world with something like
160,000 hectares under cultivation in 2020. That is about 618 square
miles by the way.

I see another expert who read it all on the Internet. The US military burned the poppy fields of the Taliban and the CIA simply looked the other way for the Afghani government. This is what happens in places like that. Tell us more of what you learned "on the Internet".
