Tragic young Steve Duffield named as victim of Anlaby Road crash ashe cycled with best pal

A young boy who died in a horrific accident on Anlaby Road has been named as Steven Duffield, described as a much-loved 'cheeky chappy' by his heartbroken family.

Steven was killed after he was struck by a car on Anlaby Road on Monday evening. He was riding his bike alongside his best friend, who was also seriously injured and is being treated in hospital.

The collision happened at around 6.10pm and resulted in both boys being rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary, where Steven tragically died.

Steven's devastated parents, Alison, 43, and Micky, 54, were being comforted by specialist police liaison officers.

On Tuesday afternoon as scores of people came together to release balloons in a moving tribute to Steven in West Park, his cousin Alan Duffield said: "He was only ten. He was a nice lad - a cheeky chappy.

"The parents are devastated. They are releasing some balloons at the park then coming to see where it happened.

"I miss him so much. I can't say more than that."

He said Steven, a pupil at Hall Road School, was a live-wire and was "mad keen on cycling".

He told the Sun: "He was always out on his pushbike. We don't know what's happened. He and the lad who were injured were best friends."

Friends and family also gathered at the scene of the incident to pay tribute.

One said: "My mate cradled the lad who was injured for 20 minutes in his arms. There was a huge crowd here."

Another woman said: "He had his whole life ahead of him."

Less than 24 hours after the incident, emotional tributes to the "little angel" have already started to appear on the railings of the Anlaby Road flyover, just yards from the crash site.

A number of colourful flowers were fastened to the bridge during the course of Tuesday, along with cards - one of which pledges that Steven is "never gonna be forgotten".

"RIP Steven my little man," one reads.

"You are gonna be missed and you are never gonna be forgotten. Can't believe you have gone at such a young age. You will always be remembered as my little angel and my little man.

"Sending love to you and your family."

A 30-year-old man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of driving offences in connection with the collision and was still in police custody on Tuesday afternoon as the force's enquiries continue.

A second message affixed alongside the floral tributes also shared the thoughts of another family.

It reads: "So sorry for the loss of your precious boy Steve. Sending all our love."

The tributes began to appear after resident nearby revealed their anguish at what they witnessed when they realised what had happened on their doorstep.

"When I got outside, I saw two people and the accident. It had already happened," Anlaby Road resident Ibraham Omar said.

"I saw too many people. I saw people on the floor. Two children.

"It was really sad. I'm crying. I'm not happy.

"People were shouting. There were children there and young people. I'm crying because there was children involved. With children it is too much. I have children too.

"Last night I couldn't sleep because of what I had seen."

Another resident explained how the route has become "a lot busier" in recent times.

"My grandson is 16 and I always say be careful on these roads especially around that time over rush hour. I think it’s got busier because of all the road works," she said.

It was around 6pm I came in the hallway and saw all the lights and road blocked with two ambulances, one at both sides of the road and a few police cars.

"It looked bad. All around the trees on the green was taped off. On the main road there was two cars parked up which looked like they had been involved."

The news of Steven's death was shared by Humberside Police on Tuesday morning as they launched an investigation into what happened.

Their families are both being cared for by specially trained officers.

"A 10-year-old boy has sadly died following a collision on Anlaby Road in Hull yesterday evening, Monday 19 October," the statement read.

"The collision happened shortly after 6pm when a blue BMW collided with two boys riding a bike on the flyover, near to the junction with Selby Street.

"Emergency services attended and the boys were taken to hospital for treatment to life threatening injuries.

"One of the boys sadly died a short time later. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

"The other boy remains in hospital in a critical condition.

"A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences in connection with the collision, he remains in our custody whilst enquiries continue.

"Officers from our serious collisions unit are appealing for anyone that witnessed the collision, who has not already spoken to us, to please get in touch.

"They are also keen to hear from anyone that saw either vehicle prior to the collision or anyone with dashcam footage from driving in the area at the time."
