No, but I updated from Netscrape 4.76 to Netscrape 7.1 which seems to be causing some extended character set compatibility problems. Tom Sherman - Close to 41½ N, 90½ W Tom, I downloaded Netscape 7.1 too and it fouled up my computer a bit. I couldn't get it off fast enough. I have found that IE (Internet Explorer) is as good as it gets. It is fast and stable. What is it that you don't like about IE? And why are you calling it Netscrape I wonder, other than the fact that it doesn't seem to work very well. Ed Dolan - Minnesota I'm not one of those if-it's-Microsoft-it's-bad sorts. But when it comes to browsers, I hate having to buy third-party software to stop those damned pop-up ads, pages that suddenly multiply faster than you can close them, malicious code that infects and takes over your computer, etc. For most of those problems, take a look at Opera, for example. It's fast, and you can tell it to accept pop-up windows or not. For the malicious code, you can buy some virus-protection software which will stop most of them. Or you can go with an OS that's less prone to infection and attacks, like Linux. Thanks Larry, I have heard nothing but good things about Opera too. I will maybe investigate that browser. I do get a lot of pop-ups and I have spyware and adware on my computer like you wouldn't believe. It takes many minutes for my computer to get up and running. I am relatively unsophisticated when it comes to computers and it is just all I can do to post messages to this newsgroup, always my first priority. I find that I can't even find my home page any more as it is always being hijacked by various websites. Where I pick up these home web pages I haven't the foggiest notion. I am basically a naif wandering in the wilderness. But as long as I stay connected to my life line ARBR, I will soldier on in my accustomed fashion. I don't think I could handle Linux as Microsoft Windows XP Home keeps me fully occupied for the present. I regularly have to pull the plug (the power connection) on my computer to get it to stop doing what it is doing and to get a reboot. Sigh, I don't think I will ever get any of this figured out. It may be that I will go back to my beloved library and read books like I used to before I ever knew anything at all about computers. And I will take my computer and all its accessories and throw them into the trash. I can only take so much aggravation. Ed Dolan - Minnesota The best way to get into Linux is to *not* abandon what you're familiar with. At least, not at first. See if there's someone in your neck of the woods who is familar with Linux and installing it, and have your computer set up to "dual boot" - a little menu comes up, and you choose which to boot to. You can have it default to one or the other, to avoid the hassle of hitting a key if you want. You may find, as I did, that nearly all of the things that I do with a computer, I can do it with Linux. With lots less hassle, lots less worries about infections, and *lots* cheaper! Priced Photoshop lately? Then check out how much The GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) goes for. Oh, those hijacked home pages - it's your registry that's been messed with. I had to help out a friend in DC a while back with the same problem. His browser was suddenly bringing up a porn site as its home page. And, try as he might to change it to something else, when he rebooted, up would come the porn. The secret is to look at the programs that come up when you turn on your computer. One of them is resetting your registry to use its choice of home page, not yours. If you truly want to get into Linux painlessly without installing or changing anything try Knoppix. It runs off a cd. Just download and burn an iso image of knoppix onto a cd, boot to the cd and there you are with a truly useful and easy version of Linux to enjoy. David Red Hat Linux 9 Knoppix 3.? It's not how the team spells it, though, and I think that the Directeur Sportif would be most upset were he to discover that one of his people consistently mis-spelled the name. Except that were we to draw his attention to this matter, he would merely clutch his sides and fall about laughing. Interestingly, the /last/ time "Fabrizio" was taken to task for this, he claimed it was a typo. You might at least try to be *consistently* silly, Fabbo. -- Dave Larrington - http://www.legslarry.beerdrinkers.co.uk/ ================================================== ========= Editor - British Human Power Club Newsletter http://www.bhpc.org.uk/ ================================================== ========= |
