Default tandem with odd details

A really nice photo of an 1895 4-man tandem:

As the caption mentions, the captain was the co-founder of
Rolls-Royce.

(The site calls the quad a "duad" because the cursive "Q" looked like
a "D" to someone.)

Here's the large version of the photo, with a few details marked:
http://home.comcast.net/~carlfogel/download/quad.jpg

(The large version is so big that tinypic reduces it--3504 x 3045
pixels. The front wheel should just fit a 1280 screen.)

Like most tandems, lots of spokes--56, front and rear, with two broken
spokes visible on the rear.

Nice lamp for night rides.

Odd gearing arrangement: two small front sprockets using small chain
on sharp-toothed inch-pitch chain, connecting to two slightly bigger
sprockets with much blunter teeth and heavier inch-pitch chain. The
final drive off the big sprocket switches back to sharp teeth and
small chain.

Cheers,

Carl Fogel
