Default 'Parked cars stopped fire engine in Edinburgh'.

This doesn't happen with bicycles but they too are obstructed by
parked cars.

"Firefighters had to abandon their engine and walk to a blaze in
Edinburgh with their equipment because double-parked cars were
blocking the road.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue criticised motorists for their
"inconsiderate" parking.

A spokesman said it was lucky no-one died in the early morning blaze,
which broke out in the ground floor of a tenement at Springvalley
Terrace.

An 83-year-old man was treated for the effects of breathing in smoke.

Head of operations John Dickie said: "It is only as a result of the
determination of the firefighters to get to the incident and some luck
that there was not a fire fatality."

He said the service regularly had problems with double-parking in the
street had leafleted residents in the past.

"It is totally unacceptable and we would urge people to stop and think
before they take the easy option and leave a car double-parked. It
could cost lives," he warned."

Whether it is off-topic is debatable, but it is not rubbish.

We are often told that cyclists are an obstruction on the roads. In
Telford the courts even convict cyclists for the "crime" of cycling
along the road [1], though the police [2] may not try that one again
after it was thrown out on appeal.

In this case it was motorists' vehicles which were the obstruction.
It is difficult to see how cyclists' vehicles could cause a similar
obstruction as they are far smaller.

[2] it is claimed that the police were the ones who decided to
prosecute.

Absolutely correct. In some areas of mainly terraced streets, and this by no
means limited to Edinburgh or Scotland, obstructive car-parking - especially
in the evening - has become a notorious joke. The first thought in one's
mind, especially at corners and other junctions, is what will happen in the
event of a fire or similar emergency requiring the attendance of a larger
appliance.

I know why the situation is allowed to continue. It's because the task of
ctually doing something about it is seen as potentially politically damaging.
But the problem does need to be tackled. Proper designation of the places
where areas where parking is obstructive, coupled with effective enforcement
measures - a night-shift for a start - would be a good start. In the end,
residents who cannot provide their own off-highway storage for motor vehicles
have to come to realise that the highway does not belong to them.

Perhaps we need the Japanese system where you cannot purchase a car
without having an officially certified space to park it in.

Oh joy! Our streets might then be quiet, safe places for modern kids to
play...

Parking like this is totally unacceptable. I wish the police would crack
down on this kind of selfish parking.
