I wonder if Radio Shack will disband after only one year. If Armstrong
does race in the Tour of 2010 and then retires again, the team will
probably dissolve. I also wonder how the Tour will handle 3 foreign
teams from the same country.

At least there's an opening, since Astana's not getting invited.

What makes a team's identity?

Columbia is registered in the US but only has two US riders. Columbia is
an American sponsor, but HTC is Taiwanese. HTC wants to become the
primary sponsor. The Columbia team evolved from the German T-mobile team
and last year was financed significantly if not totally by T-Mobile's
buyout of their agreement.

On the other hand, Astana is registered in Luxembourg but has 10 Kazhak
riders and is financed primarily by Kazhak sponsors.

Do people living outside of the US see a strong affiliation between
Columbia and the US?

If the teams essentially remain the same next year, RadioShack could
usurp Garmin's spot if the Tour did not want invite three "USA" teams.
ProTour status does not guarantee nor obligate a team to compete in the
Tour. Neither Lampre nor Fuji-Servetto competed in the Tour this year.
However, the Tour could drop team rosters back to 8 riders and add two
more teams without sacrificing any teams that participated this year.
OTOH, who knows if Astana will be invited next year? Armstrong will be
there though, because he is money in the bank to the Tour.

Depends on what you meant by "competed".

Lampre was at the tour and came in 19th out of 20 in the team
classification, last among all of the Pro Tour teams.

In retrospect, it makes more sense to me if Armstrong's team had been
sponsored by Viagra, as it would interest all those people rendered
impotent by cycling. It would been amusing to have team rider
testimonials as to their reinvigorated intimacy since joining the
team.

That would make for some interesting jersey logos!

Here's one that's used in MMA:

For arguments sake let's assume Lance only races a year full time. In
the years after 2010, I think he will start transitioning into a DS
role and ride in a few races of his choosing(kinda like Pete Rose w/
the reds). I think it will be interesting to see his progress, much
more interesting than his career.

Though he talked about it, IMO, he will never work as a DS. It would
be too peripheral and to him boring (though it's anything but boring
from JB's mode/perspective). He might hang around on the bus, but
after next year he'll try to find something else, hopefully not
politics. Hard to imagine what. Not much compares, physically to
multi-stage racing, even RAAM (a different kind of suffering).

But no managing a team for him (except as a part-owner, dropping in
when he feels like it), imo.
