BERKELEY -- A candlelight prayer and memorial circle will be held
tomorrow in remembrance of an environmental activist who died while
protesting logging.

Activists and environmental leaders from Earth First will honor David
``Gypsy'' Chain with words and music at 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall at
All Souls Episcopal Church, located at Cedar and Spruce streets in
Berkeley. Light refreshments will follow.

Chain, 24, was killed September 17 when a tree crushed him during a
protest on Pacific Lumber Co. property. The death was the first in more
than a decade of protests against logging in the Headwaters forest area.

Earth First members contend that Chain was killed by a logger who
knowingly cut the tree to fall in the protesters' direction. Since
Chain's death, members of the group said they have maintained a
roadblock on the route to the area where the activist was killed.

Last week, the group released a videotape that shows a logger
threatening the activists shortly before Chain's death. The group said
the logger is the same one who felled the deadly tree.

But Pacific Lumber, which has questioned the tape's authenticity, said
that Chain's death was an accident and that its logging crew was unaware
that activists were in the area.

The memorial circle is being co-sponsored by Earth First, Bay Area
Coalition for Headwaters, the Rose Foundation and the Ecumenical Peace
Initiative. For more information, call the BACH office at (510) 835-
6303.

Memorial donations may be made to North Coast Earth First at P.O. Box
28, Arcata, Calif., 95518.

Chain saws are loud. This group of morons had to know they were
standing within the falling radius of a tree while it was being cut.
Why didn't they stand clear?

But Pacific Lumber, which has questioned the tape's authenticity, said

That's as silly as the protesters' claims. You get ready to fell a tree,
look around to see what's in range of the fall, and are totally unaware
that a group of idiots are standing there yelling stuff at you?
