Family, friends recall man killed near White Rock

08:40 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 23, 2006

By EMILY GOLDSTEIN / The Dallas Morning News

For pedestrians and bikers who frequent White Rock Lake, 63-year-old
Richard Sartain was a familiar sight. Many remember his near daily walks
that sometimes were punctuated with outbursts of dancing.

Michael Sartain said his father, a retired financial adviser and day
trader, usually circled the lake about five times a week. “He would walk
around the lake and he would stop in the parking lots and do this weird,
tribal dance,” the son said Monday.
Richard W. Sartain

On Friday evening, Richard Sartain was struck by an accused drunken
driver as he walked along the shoulder in the 400 block of East Lawther
Drive. He died at the scene. Since his death, Michael Sartain said,
e-mails have been pouring in from people who recalled seeing him at the
lake.

“He just had this happiness about him,” said Richard Sartain’s sister,
Barbara Taylor. “When he was killed, he was doing what he loved, which
was walking around White Rock Lake.”

According to Dallas police, driver Astrid Karlsson, 60, of Dallas was
northbound when Mr. Sartain was hit. Ms. Karlsson eventually lost
control of the car, causing it to overturn. She was taken to Baylor
University Medical Center, where she was in fair condition, a hospital
spokeswoman said.

Ms. Karlsson has been charged with intoxication manslaughter, failure to
stop and render aid and driving with a suspended license, police said.

Ms. Karlsson’s license was suspended earlier this year for three months
ending June 4, Department of Public Safety records state. In May, she
pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while intoxicated stemming from a
November arrest, according to Dallas County criminal court records.

She could not immediately be reached for comment.

Mr. Sartain grew up in Highland Park and attended Southern Methodist
University, where his father, Aaron Q. Sartain, was a professor and dean
of the business school. His mother taught at the Dallas Country Day
School, now St. Mark's School of Texas, and at the Vickery Ward School.
Both preceded him in death.

Mr. Sartain graduated with a business degree from SMU and served as a
Peace Corps volunteer stationed in Colombia during the late 1960s.

Michael Sartain said his father became interested in national security
after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and began educating
himself about Islam. Some days, he would attend both church and a
mosque, the son said.

Through Dallas Fellowship Church, he was involved in Youth Believing In
Change, which offers after-school and summer programs for area children
and is designed to build character through a spiritual and educational
foundation.

The Rev. Vincent Gaddis said participants who loved watching him dance
came to expect Mr. Sartain’s presence at the group’s activities. “We
called him ‘Fancy Dancer’ because he always danced at our events,” Rev.
Gaddis said.

A husband to Maria for 30 years and the father of two sons, Richard
Sartain belonged to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He also
volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Mothers Against Drunk Driving,
Ms. Taylor said.

Services were scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday at Fellowship Dallas. The
family asked that donations be made to Habitat for Humanity.

If you want to kill someone in NYC, just run them over with your car.
Most of the time you won't be charged with anything. And if you're
lucky, you can take off without anyone seeing you and leave the victim
bleeding in the street. Even if you're caught, the penalty will
probably be probation- just tell them you heard a clunk but just kept
driving because you th0ught you might have hit a pile of trash. And
if you really want to walk away with no legal hassle at all, hit a
cyclist. Those guys in the cars never have a problem once the police
arrive. The cops seem to be happy that there's one less cyclist on
the road clogging up traffic lanes for SUV drivers who might have to
swerve to avoid you.

"Failure to stop and render aid" - Does that mean "hit and run" or are
people now legally obligated to assist others who are injured?

This is how the Texas law is worded. You can do a word search to see
what the ramifications are, but there is a list of things you are
supposed to do if you are involved in a motor vehicle accident.

On examination of the site today while riding, the family was placing
flowers at the site of impact [death] and the car wrecked out about a
quarter mile later down the road when Ms. Drunk failed to negotiate a
corner and subsequently flipped the car, onto another pedestrian path I
might add. So it appears to be a "kill and run" accident.

OK. I just wanted to make sure that if I saw a crackhead claiming he
had broken his while walking down the street that I didn't have to give
him mouth to mouth or drag him to the hospital. g
